Freedom is about what it feels like when a person leaves a controlling relationship. The guitar features the late Darryl St. John. Originally written for a rock opera that Houseman was co-producing. The storyline was based on a Florida medical technician in the early 20th century who is obsessed with the corpse of one of his patients, and he robs her grave so he can bring the body back to his lab so he won't be lonely. This is based on a true story. The song was supposed be sung by the entrapped ghost of the girl. At the same time, one of Houseman's friends was experiencing a bitter divorce and she was inspired to take the viewpoint of her friend's bitter wife after thinking about how difficult it may have been to live with him.
